The 340D sits above the popular 336D (36-ton class) and below the 349D (45-ton class) in Caterpillar’s D-series lineup. It is available in both standard and “L” (Long Undercarriage) configurations, with the L variant featuring a heavier, wider track frame that significantly improves stability and lifting performance over the front and sides. Compared to its sibling, the 336D L, the 340D L’s HDHW (Heavy-Duty High-Wide) undercarriage is 330 mm wider, 270 mm higher, and 1,360 kg heavier, providing enhanced stability in rocky terrain and greater lifting capacity.
